Porsche 911 covered in gold

If you have enough money and you would like to have an ugly but unique car, buy some gold and cover your car with it. This way you will attract everyone’s attention.

This Porsche was covered in 18 kg of gold and I really don’t understand why the owner wanted to do such thing. I think it is pretty dangerous to park a car like this in any area. You should always have some guards to protect it.

Enough gold leaf to cover a Porsche probably costs all of $450. Big deal–this is no different than sticking on retarded looking oversized chrome wheels. (Cheaper, actually.)

  4. By Sean on Jul 7, 2008 | Reply

You could cover it in platinum leaf, it’s not that much when you consider it’s a film measured in microns. Maybe an ounce of material if your sloppy and don’t know what your doing.

  5. By olof on Jul 7, 2008 | Reply

dave, you’re a genius. it says that it was covered in 18 kg of gold, hardly 450 bucks. not even americans can be that ignorant to the metric system.

Whats with the generalized attack on Americans olof?

  7. By Rob on Jul 7, 2008 | Reply

Well, I am an American, and here in America 18kg of gold would weigh over 39 lbs. One kilogram equals 2.2 pounds. 18kg is more than my 3 year old daughter weighs. So, if you guys know where I can buy that much gold for $450 dollars, take me there, and I guarantee that we will ALL be filthy rich in a matter of days…

Regardless of weight or cost it comes down to simple aesthetics. The Porsche 911 is a beautiful vehicle due to its gorgeous curves and simplicity in sleek design. I think this distracts from those curves. It’s only my opinion but I think for the money spent on this there are many other ways to make the car look better than factory … for whatever reasons one may have.

Could it be that the source meant to say 18 karat gold?

  11. By Geoff on Jul 7, 2008 | Reply

Assuming ingot gold @ $500/ounce=gold leaf about $700/ounce. That’s about $450,000. The adhesive(assuming it’s the same as jewellers use) is at least another $100,00:that’s $550,000. God knows what the craftsmen would charge to put the stuff on-the car would have to be partially dismantled for a start. You could see the whole job coming to at least $750000. Dave, I take it you like you wheels encrusted with diamonds?

  12. By Don on Jul 7, 2008 | Reply

    That’s almost 40lbs gold.

You know, there are ‘gold’ paints available now that are a damned good replica of real gold. They’re considerably more pricey than plain auto paint, but you get my drift. 90% of the pics like this floating around the net are real pics, with BS stories attached, like the diamond encrusted Benz. (look it up on snopes if you’re curious)

All that said, while it’s not my style, it looks pretty fecking sharp.

You are right, olof, but you already knew that.
I’ll wow the world and do the math for everyone, being a supposed (not what you said, but what the world thinks) “stupid American”.

    18 kg of gold
    1 kilogram = 35.3 ounces
    18 kilograms = 634.9 ounces
$925 USD per ounce of gold (at the moment).
    634.9 ounces of gold = $587,282.50 USD
    $587,282.50 USD = 18 kg of gold

    Over a half million.
So, yes, this is alot of money just to make your car look ugly.
I say gold is pee-colored silver.

Its obviously not gold leaf as its screwed on in panels!
Id imagine it wouldn’t be real judging by how thick it looks.
Why do it to a lowly Porsche when a Bugatti Veyron or Aston Martin would look so much better :)

  21. By Ben on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

It is not Gold leaf, You can check out http://www.goldleaf.com.au to see for yourself as these guys make it (Gold leaf).

  22. By Alias1431 on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

All of you are wrong. It’s not gold leaf, look at some of the pictures more closely. You can see that the side paneling is actually screwed in, meaning much thicker plates as opposed to leaf. Gold leaf wouldn’t even last a few hundred miles, or a couple rough car washes.

This is one of the dumbest ideas ever.

  24. By Justin on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

“its clear the OP meant” something other than what he typed? :) its not like he said “i liek gold” and it wouldn’t make sense unless you corrected it. He literally used a completely cogent amount of gold, and since metric is the world’s standard unit of measurements it seems very likely that he did mean 18kg as opposed to 18karat gold. notice he said “18kg -of- gold”. for him to mess that up, would require not only adding an extra “g” after the 18k, but also adding the word “of” and an extra space.

  25. By Tomasz on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

One thing for sure you don’t have to worry about the rust problem.

  26. By Seymour on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

Um. Isn’t it possible to print a pattern on gold leaf? If you look off into the distance you can’t really see a divot where the “panels” meet, which would seem to indicate this is just a pattern. However it’s hard to say either way since these pictures aren’t at a high enough resolution.

There’s one main point which seems to have been overlooked here:

To paint a car it takes approx 2.5 to 3 litres of paint.

    So my calculation
Using the current price of Gold as approx 928.60 an ounce
And 1 litre = 33.8140227 (US fluid) ounces

It would take about 84.5 - 101.4 ounces of gold to paint the car.

This makes the price between $78,466.7 - $94,160.04 (US dollars..though I’m not American)

However the person has said its 18K gold (my assumption being they didnt mean 18Kg but rather 18K) so it should cost less than the price worked out which uses the price of “pure” gold.

But regardless of all this I agree with Bill that the picture is most likely NOT of a car covered in real gold but gold paint.

I also agree with most of the comments above that it really doesn’t look attractive anyway so whatever they paid for it was not worth the end result.

But you know what…we all spent time looking at the pic, reading the comments, thinking and posting. So the person got what they really wanted out of painting their car this way -Attention!

18 kg of gold… that’s several bricks of gold. nice. i’d love to have a couple sitting in my backyard, just appreciating in value.

  30. By SamIam on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

The car is painted in gold, not real gold but a gold color. The paint is pretty expensive and requires great care when applying, like the chrome paint someone done a Lambo in a year or so ago.

All of the ’screws’ are airbrushed on as are the spoiler grapics. take a look at the photo of the mirror.

Someone spent a great deal of money on the paint but hardly half a million.

Whatever, I think it’s fun. Isn’t the point of having a flashy car getting noticed? It’s like people with rockin’, sorta ugly hairstyles… you wouldn’t choose it for yourself but it’s kinda interesting to see it out in the world.

Plus, Gold won’t oxidize, so the owner won’t have any problem keeping it looking spiffy. Just buff it and it will gleam.

Now they only have to encrust it with gems. ;-)

Either way…usually the idea is to remove excess weight in a sports car, not add it. Aside from ruining a beautiful car’s aesthetics, this idiot has destroyed the other main attribute of a Porsche: it’s agility and acceleration. More proof that just because you can afford something, does not mean you deserve it.

  36. By IT'S A TYPO on Jul 8, 2008 | Reply

It’s not 18 kilograms of gold, it’s 18 karat gold. It’s covered in gold leaf, the brick patern is airbrushed on and then the whole thing is clear-coated. Pretty basic stuff here folks.

If any of you, would be able to afford at least one of those gold leafs - than you wouldn’t be posting such comments like ugly car or damn waste of money. Just calculating $450 for the gold and than saying that 1kg=2.2lb explains to me all your intellectual level. Just keep living your miserable lives and don’t disturb yourself by posting.

That’s exactly right turned overnight from communism to capitalism, just overnight, without taking years going through Great Depression or whole bunch of recessions. Ready to impress each and everyone of those hundred years old capitalists. Talking about taste why wouldn’t you wonder why all high top level butiques most profitable nowhere else but Moscow. Just make sure you know what’re u talking about first before start such conversations. And by the way, why wouldn’t go out and take 1986 Camry to carwash and get yourself a new pair of Levi’s (I’m sure u can find them on sale for $20)

I have been a luxury car dealer for over 14 years and what this person has done to this vehicle is a sin. If they were to bring this vehicle in to be used as a trade in, I would say it hurts the value by 30%. If the owner is happy good for him.

As we say in the car buisness “There is an ass for every seat!”

  55. By Hammer on Jul 22, 2008 | Reply

This is interesting. Is it possible to cover a car with 18 kg of gold? How much is it… really? Well… the density of gold is almost 20 000 kg for each cubic meter. Let’s say we had 20 kg to make it easy. It would mean a cube with a 1 decimeter long side; 1 cubic decimeter. That’s the amount of gold… almost. It’s like a cube with each side about 4 inches long. Can we use that cube to cover a whole car? Well… let’s say we flatten the cube so it’s like… 0.1 millimeter (about 4 milli-inches) thick. How big would that plate be? Well… about 5 meter times 2 meter (16.5 feet times 6.5 feet). Sounds pretty reasonable to me…
