2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell Prototype

Mercedes seems to be hurling itself with gutso at the electric car market of the future, or at least its AMG division has been getting extremely busy!

This is the SLS AMG E-CELL and it show cases some the latest development in tree hugger friendly performance motoring. It boasts a power output of 526hp and 649ib-ft of torque, and with that kind of power, you know this car is going to do the business at the traffic light grand prix’s.

So exactly how quick is it? Well, it promises a 0-60 time of around 4 seconds, which is incredible considering its all electric, and compares well to the 6.3 liter V8 SLS AMG which pulls off the 0-60 in around 3.7 seconds.

And so as exciting as this all sounds, being able to plug a SLS AMG into your wall and next morning go out and enjoy supercar performance, are you ever likely to be able to get one? Well, yes and no, yes because the plan is to launch it in 2013, seems a little optimistic to us but that’s the aim, and no because its likely to cost the think end of a quarter of a million euros, which for most of us puts it a little beyond the monthly budget.

Still, we can look forward to encountering one of these on the streets, which of course you wont even know about until its gone past you as it should be pretty much silent… unless they add a growler to give you some warning.
